Pakistan: Gunmen Attack Dam Workers in Balochistan, Killing Five
In Balochistan province, Pakistan, gunmen attacked workers at a dam site on Tuesday, resulting in five deaths and two injuries, VOA reported yesterday.
The incident occurred in the Panjgur district, known for its natural resources. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants escaped on motorcycles immediately after the shooting. Provincial spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the casualties and stated that an investigation is underway.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) later asserted that the victims were pro-government militia members. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the violence, labeling the attackers as enemies of development.
This incident follows a recent assault in Duki district, where 21 coal workers were killed. In a separate attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, gunmen targeted a health office, killing a police officer and prompting the suspension of a polio vaccination campaign. The region has seen a surge in militant activity, with over 1,000 fatalities reported this year.
