Militants kill at least six in Pakistan security post attack

Militants attacked a security post in northwest Pakistan late Thursday, killing at least six personnel, the military reported on Friday.

The attackers, from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), attempted to storm the post, but their efforts were repelled by security forces after a fierce exchange of fire.

The attack, which occurred in the restive South Waziristan tribal district, resulted in the deaths of five assailants, according to a military statement.

In a separate incident in North Waziristan, Pakistani forces killed seven militants attempting to cross the border from Afghanistan. A large cache of ammunition and explosives was recovered.

Pakistan has been grappling with a resurgence of Islamist militant attacks in the northwest, alongside an ethnic separatist insurgency in the south. Islamabad accuses the TTP of operating from safe havens in Afghanistan, a claim denied by the Taliban government.

The TTP is distinct from the Afghan Taliban but swears allegiance to the group, which took control of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in 2021.
