Pakistan Arrests Al-Qaeda Leader Amin ul Haq
Pakistani authorities announced the arrest of Amin ul Haq, an Al-Qaeda leader on the U.N. sanctions list, in a significant counter-terrorism operation, Reuters reported today.
Described as a close associate of Osama Bin Laden, Haq’s arrest marks Pakistan’s first high-profile capture linked to Al-Qaeda in years. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province has filed charges against him for allegedly planning attacks on key installations.
While specific details of his plans remain undisclosed, the CTD confirmed that the arrest was made in collaboration with intelligence agencies. The U.N. sanctions panel has identified Haq as a security coordinator for Bin Laden since January 2001, citing his involvement in supplying arms and support to Al-Qaeda and Taliban factions. Pakistan’s interior ministry has yet to comment on the arrest.
