Pakistan Deploys Army, Rangers for Nationwide Muharram Security
In preparation for the upcoming Muharram observances, the Pakistani government has approved the nationwide deployment of the Pakistan Army and Rangers for security purposes, Dawn Newspaper reported yesterday.
According to the source, the interior ministry’s order states that this deployment was requested by all provincial governments, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The troops will be mobilized under Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act to aid civil authorities in ensuring peace and order during the month of mourning.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has also reviewed the overall security plan, which includes banning drone usage and potential internet/mobile network shutdowns if deemed necessary by provincial authorities. Advance planning for rallies, strict checking at entry/exit points, and camera monitoring of gatherings are among the other measures announced.
The interior minister also directed that the security of mosques and other places of worship should be given full attention.
