Pakistan Experiences Wettest April in Decades as Climate Change Impacts Worsen

Pakistan has faced its “wettest April since 1961,” with rainfall more than double the monthly average, Al Jazeera Reported citing the country’s weather agency.

According to the source, the southwestern province of Balochistan saw a staggering 437% increase in rainfall. At least 144 people died due to the heavy storms and flooding.

“Climate change is a major factor that is influencing the erratic weather patterns in our region,” said Zaheer Ahmad Babar of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

The extreme weather comes on the heels of devastating floods in 2022 that killed 1,739 people and caused $30 billion in damages.

Experts warn that Pakistan is ill-prepared to cope with the escalating climate crisis, urging the government to prioritize climate relief and mitigation measures.
