Police Investigate After Epsom Mosque Targeted with Offensive Graffiti

Surrey Police have launched an investigation after the Epsom Islamic Centre in Surrey, UK, was targeted by vandals in the early hours of Tuesday, as reported by the BBC.

The walls surrounding the mosque on Hook Road were spray-painted with offensive language. This is the second time the premises have been vandalized in recent months, with the previous incident occurring on August 29. The center stated it was “saddened” and noted an overall “increase in Islamophobic and racially-motivated abuse” in the area recently.

Surrey Police confirmed they are investigating a report of “racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage.” Inspector Tommy Pearson, the Epsom and Ewell borough commander, condemned the vandalism as “unacceptable” and assured that the police are working with mosque leaders to ensure the community feels safe. The force is also exploring whether further crime prevention measures can be implemented.

The Epsom Islamic Centre thanked its neighbors and the wider community for their “overwhelming expressions of support and solidarity.” Helen Maguire, MP for Epsom and Ewell, also condemned the act, stating there is “no place for Islamophobia in the community.”
