Hundreds of Shia Muslims in Leicester, UK, are set to mark Ashura with a solemn procession commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala over thirteen centuries ago. The event remains a powerful symbol of sacrifice, justice, and resistance against oppression.

The mourning procession is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM from the Town Hall Square and conclude around 4:30 PM at Jubilee Square. Participants, dressed in black, will chant elegies and carry banners expressing devotion to Imam Hussain and the values he stood for.

Organized by Duxbury Road Mosque, the procession is one of the most prominent religious events in the UK’s Shia calendar. It draws a diverse group of participants, many of whom view the message of Karbala as a universal call for justice and human dignity.

Local media have noted that the annual gathering transcends sectarian lines, offering a moment of reflection and solidarity. For many, the echo of Karbala in Leicester’s streets is a reminder that the principles for which Imam Hussain stood remain relevant in today’s world—resonating as a timeless stand against tyranny.
