The Social Justice Council in the northern Syrian city of Kobani announced on Tuesday the release of 66 prisoners in what was described as a humanitarian gesture marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan, according to a rights source affiliated with the council.

The source said the release was carried out “as an initial humanitarian step on the occasion of Ramadan,” noting that the detainees had been transferred over the past two months from Raqqa prison to Kobani due to deteriorating security conditions during that period.

Syrian media outlets reported that relatives of the detainees, along with tribal elders and community leaders from the areas of Sarrin, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor, were present to receive those released. The scene was marked by a social atmosphere associated with the religious occasion.

The freed prisoners reportedly originate from Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Hasakah, Tabqa, and Sarrin. They had been detained on various charges, most of which were described by local sources as criminal in nature.

The move comes amid broader local initiatives accompanying Ramadan in several Syrian regions, where social and humanitarian measures are often introduced to promote community reconciliation and ease burdens on families.
