German Court Jails Three Syrians for Terrorism and War Crimes

A German court has sentenced three Syrian men to prison for membership in a foreign terrorist organization and committing war crimes during the Syrian civil war, Arab News reported. The Munich court handed down sentences ranging from four and a half to nearly 10 years to the defendants, identified as Amer Tarak A., Sohail A., and Basel O. The men were members of Liwa Jund Al-Rahman, a rebel group founded by Amer Tarak A., which later merged with the Daesh group.

Prosecutors said Amer Tarak A. seized an oil field in Deir Ezzor to fund the group and ordered the massacre of Shiite Muslims in Hatla, an attack filmed by co-defendant Sohail A. The court rejected the defendants’ claim that they were fighting a legitimate resistance against Syrian President Bashar Assad. All three fled to Germany after the fall of Daesh and may still appeal the verdict.
