Pope Leo on Sunday urged an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in Sudan, expressing deep sorrow over reports of widespread atrocities in the Darfur city of Al-Fashir, Reuters reported. During his weekly Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff condemned violence against civilians, especially women and children, and the obstruction of aid operations.

He appealed to the international community to act decisively to support humanitarian relief. The U.N. human rights office said hundreds of civilians were killed when the Rapid Support Forces seized Al-Fashir after an 18-month siege. The pope also voiced concern over deadly post-election clashes in Tanzania, urging restraint and dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
