Iraq Emerges as Leading Destination for Religious and Cultural Tourism in the Region

A report by World Travel and Tourism highlighted Iraq’s growing tourism sector, which generated approximately $5.7 billion in revenue in 2024 — a 25% increase from the previous year. The report ranked Iraq seventh among Arab countries in tourism income but noted significant potential for further growth, particularly through religious and cultural tourism.
Religious tourism remains a key driver, with cities such as Karbala, Najaf, and Samarra attracting millions of pilgrims annually from countries including Iran and India, especially during events like Ashura and Arbaeen. This influx supports local economies and boosts transportation, hospitality, and service sectors.
The report also pointed to ongoing cultural restoration projects, such as the rehabilitation of Babylon and the Ishtar Gate, funded by international organizations, which enhance Iraq’s global cultural appeal. The selection of Baghdad as the Arab Capital of Tourism for 2025 was described as a strategic opportunity to attract investment and strengthen tourism infrastructure.
Despite its potential, the report warned that Iraq’s tourism industry faces challenges, including security concerns and underdeveloped facilities. It called for comprehensive strategies to improve airports, hotels, and transportation systems while promoting visitor safety and sustainable tourism. The report concluded that Iraq could become a major tourism hub in the Middle East and North Africa.
