EU Voices Support for Syria’s New Transitional Government in Talks with President al-Sharaa

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks with Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to Anadolu Agency.

In a joint post on X, the EU leaders said they had a “good exchange” and reaffirmed support for “a genuine, inclusive, peaceful and Syrian-led transition, free from harmful foreign interference.”

They pledged to deepen political dialogue, address urgent humanitarian needs, and back socio-economic recovery and reconstruction in Syria.

Al-Sharaa, who came to power following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, has overseen a transitional administration formed in January.

EU officials see the meeting as part of a broader shift toward reengaging with Syria’s new authorities, while maintaining calls for accountability, inclusive governance, and restoration of state sovereignty.
