A new analytical study has described the Arbaeen pilgrimage as a civilizational event that transcends traditional religious ritual, framing it as a powerful expression of human identity and collective values. Titled “The Arbaeen Pilgrimage: Symbol and Society,” the study explores the sociological and spiritual dimensions of the annual Shia pilgrimage to Karbala, which draws tens of millions of participants from around the world.

According to the study, Arbaeen fosters a “moral revolution” marked by widespread acts of generosity, solidarity, and compassion. Researchers noted the temporary transformation of social behavior during the pilgrimage, with communities embodying values of altruism and unity.

The report also criticized Western media for its lack of coverage, despite the pilgrimage’s global scale. It referenced foreign media outlets questioning how millions are accommodated, fed, and served in such an organized and voluntary manner.

The study further explored the concept of “sacred time” as a collective yearning for justice, with religious symbols like Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) representing spiritual resistance to tyranny. Linking Arbaeen to ancient Sumerian and Babylonian traditions, it also highlighted the symbolic meaning of the number 40 in human development.
