Deadly Fire at Iraqi Mall Claims 63 Lives in Kut
………………..
A massive fire tore through a shopping mall in the eastern Iraqi city of Kut, killing at least 63 people and injuring many others. The tragedy occurred late Wednesday at the newly opened Hyper Mall, just five days after it began operations. Authorities say the blaze broke out on the first floor and quickly engulfed the five-storey building, which houses a restaurant and a supermarket.
Eyewitnesses reported that an air conditioning unit may have exploded, triggering the fire. Many of the victims, including men, women, and children, suffocated in bathrooms while attempting to escape. Fourteen bodies remain unidentified due to severe burns.
Civil defence teams rescued more than 45 individuals trapped inside. As of early Thursday morning, ambulances were still transporting victims to overwhelmed hospitals. Rescuers continue searching for the missing amid reports of grieving families gathering outside hospitals for updates.
Wasit province governor Mohammed al-Miyahi announced three days of mourning and said legal action would be taken against the mall’s owner and the building contractor. He described the incident as a “major shock” and called for a review of safety protocols. Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered a thorough investigation to determine the cause and identify any regulatory failures.
The fire highlights ongoing concerns about lax safety standards in Iraq, where poorly enforced regulations and outdated infrastructure have led to frequent tragedies. Similar incidents in recent years include a 2023 wedding hall fire and a 2021 hospital blaze, both resulting in mass casualties.
