Iraq’s Mine Action Authority has identified Basra province as the world’s most heavily contaminated area with landmines and explosive remnants of war, a legacy of past conflicts posing ongoing risks to residents and infrastructure.

Mustafa Hamid Majid, the authority’s media director, said the agency oversees mine clearance activities nationwide, coordinating with national bodies and international organizations under strict professional standards.

He highlighted financial constraints and budget delays as major challenges slowing progress in land decontamination. Since 2009, over 30,000 casualties have been reported due to mines and unexploded ordnance across Iraq, mostly in conflict-affected provinces.

Established in 2003, the authority serves as the national lead for mine action, coordinating among the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Popular Mobilization Forces, humanitarian groups, and specialized companies.

To date, over 4,000 square kilometers of contaminated land have been cleared out of more than 6,000 square kilometers identified, marking over 60% progress despite security and operational difficulties, especially during the fight against ISIS.

The announcement comes amid growing calls for increased humanitarian efforts and international funding to help Iraq address its war legacy and clear remaining hazards that endanger civilians and hinder development.
