Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced the release of 1,534 detainees and convicts from prisons and detention centers nationwide between May 25 and May 29, 2025, as part of the amended Amnesty Law implementation, Shafaq News reported. Additionally, 5,896 individuals—including those wanted on arrest warrants, facing financial liabilities, or convicted in absentia—were granted legal reprieve during this period.

Since the law’s enactment, a total of 24,754 individuals have been released, with 111,017 beneficiaries overall, encompassing those with pending legal cases or convictions.

The council also reported recovering approximately 3.49 billion Iraqi dinars (around $247,300) during the same timeframe. The total recovered public funds now exceed 20.1 billion Iraqi dinars (approximately $1.415 million).

The Amnesty Law aims to reduce prison overcrowding and provide legal relief to many detainees and convicts, reflecting ongoing efforts to reform Iraq’s justice system and promote social stability.
