Iraqi President Calls for Increased Global Action on Desertification

Iraq’s President Abdul Latif Rashid has urged for enhanced global efforts to combat desertification during a panel at the World Economic Forum, Arab News reported yesterday. He highlighted that nearly 40% of Iraq’s land is affected by desertification, exacerbated by climate change and reduced water flows from neighboring countries.

Rashid emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that 71% of the nation’s arable land has been ravaged, leading to a 70% decline in agricultural output. He announced a 10-year program focusing on reforestation, soil preservation, and sustainable agriculture, with a goal to plant 15 billion trees.

The president also stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation with Turkey and Iran to secure equitable water-sharing agreements for the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which have seen significant reductions in water supply due to upstream dam projects. Rashid concluded by advocating for local community mobilization as essential for implementing lasting solutions.
