The United Nations envoy to Iraq has announced an initiative to support Karbala’s nomination as the Capital of Islamic Culture, citing the city’s deep historical and religious significance.

During an official visit to Karbala coinciding with the month of Muharram, the UN representative described the holy city as a living example of national unity and solidarity, embodying human and cultural values cherished by Islamic communities worldwide.

Karbala annually welcomes millions of visitors who gather to commemorate its revered religious traditions, securing its special place in the hearts of Muslims across the globe. Highlighting its rich spiritual and cultural heritage, the envoy emphasized that the city fully merits this prestigious title.

He also noted Karbala’s steady progress in growth and development, describing it as one of Iraq’s most promising provinces for attracting investment and launching development projects. Such initiatives, he added, will help strengthen the city’s economic foundations and improve its public services, reinforcing its status as a cultural and religious hub for the Islamic world.
