Over 3,000 Shrines, 70,000 Volunteers Ready for Muharram Mourning Across Iran

Iran is preparing to host Muharram mourning ceremonies with over 3,000 shrines and 70,000 volunteers involved nationwide, Iqna reported quoting Reza Moa’mami-Moqaddam, Director-General of Cultural and Social Affairs at the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization.
In an interview with IQNA, Moa’mami-Moqaddam highlighted that Imamzadeh shrines transform during Muharram into centers of culture, spiritual growth, and resistance, serving as focal points for Ashura commemorations and the culture of Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s programs go beyond traditional black banners, featuring educational and cultural activities for all ages.
Initiatives include booths answering religious questions, Ashura-themed exhibitions, artistic installations, and open-air ta’ziyeh passion plays recounting the Karbala story. A notable new feature is the Children’s Hosseiniyah, designed to teach young participants about Ashura’s values in an age-appropriate setting.
Moa’mami-Moqaddam emphasized the importance of collaboration among shrine trustees, permanent staff, and volunteers to create a vibrant atmosphere promoting religious knowledge and cultural awareness. The programs will continue through Safar, following Muharram.
Shia Muslims worldwide commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) on Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, honouring the blessed legacy of the Master of the Martyrs which established the sustenance of true Islam and its vitality forever.
