Widespread Religious and Legal Reactions in Egypt After Video Insults Holy Prophet’s Parents

A video containing offensive remarks about the parents of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) has sparked significant religious, social, and legal reactions in Egypt.

The video, widely circulated on social media in recent days, featured Egyptian preacher Muhammad Hassan Abdel-Ghaffar making derogatory statements about the Prophet’s parents. The content quickly drew widespread criticism from users, scholars, and religious institutions, with many calling it a violation of fundamental religious and ethical boundaries.

Muhammad Hassan Abdel-Ghaffar, a controversial figure known for his sharp and provocative statements, is affiliated with Salafi thought and has frequently drawn criticism from Egypt’s religious authorities for his media appearances and online speeches. His recent remarks reignited public scrutiny and led to a formal legal complaint filed against him.

Al-Azhar University, through its Fatwa Center, issued an official statement emphasizing that, according to mainstream Sunni doctrine, the Prophet’s parents are considered righteous and that any insulting remarks regarding them are incorrect and contrary to Islamic principles and ethics. This stance was widely reported in Egyptian and Arab media as a clear response to the video.

In parallel, legal action has been pursued. A recognized religious group in Egypt filed an official complaint with the country’s public prosecutor to hold Abdel-Ghaffar accountable and prevent similar incidents. The group stressed that insulting sacred figures not only offends religious sentiments but also risks social tension.
