Social Media Outrage in Egypt After Alleged Insult to Holy Prophet

A wave of anger has spread across social media platforms in Egypt following the circulation of a song accused of containing offensive references to the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his pure family. The controversy centers on a content creator identified as Omar Kousha, who was accused by users of altering the lyrics of well-known religious chants and prophetic praises and replacing them with language widely described as insulting.
The disputed clips circulated over recent days on platforms including TikTok and YouTube, where they quickly attracted high viewership before triggering widespread backlash. Critics said the videos used familiar religious melodies while inserting phrases viewed as direct insults to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family), as well as offensive references to other prophets, prompting accusations of violating religious sanctities and offending believers’ sentiments.
Online criticism escalated into coordinated reporting campaigns, with thousands of users calling on authorities and social media companies to remove the content, shut down related accounts, and pursue legal action under Egypt’s laws governing contempt of religion.
In his first public response, Kousha appeared in a video stating he was willing to delete the controversial clips but conditioned this on the repeal of Egypt’s blasphemy laws. His remarks drew further criticism, with users accusing him of trivializing public anger and avoiding a clear apology.
Separately, Egyptian lawyer Khaled Al-Masri said Kousha’s family had publicly disowned him, stating that his content did not represent them and that he alone bears responsibility for its legal and social consequences. Media reports indicated that some digital platforms have already begun removing the disputed videos amid continued calls to prevent their redistribution.
