Turkey Detains Afghan Migrants and Arrests Suspected Smugglers in Anti-Illegal Migration Operation

Turkish authorities have detained 20 undocumented Afghan migrants and arrested three people suspected of involvement in migrant smuggling during an operation in the northwestern province of Bolu, officials said.
The operation targeted irregular migration and human smuggling networks operating in the region, according to Turkish police. Following administrative procedures, the Afghan nationals were transferred to the Bolu Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, where deportation proceedings were initiated.
Authorities did not disclose further details about the migrants’ identities, their entry routes into Turkey, or the circumstances of the arrests. The investigation into the suspected smuggling network remains ongoing.
The operation comes as Turkey continues to expand measures against irregular migration through increased identity checks, border controls, and deportation procedures. Afghan nationals remain among the largest groups of undocumented migrants detained in the country.
According to Turkey’s Directorate General of Migration Management, 19,574 Afghan migrants were detained during the first half of the year, the highest figure among all nationalities recorded during that period.
Turkey remains a major transit route for Afghans fleeing conflict, economic difficulties, and humanitarian challenges, with many attempting to reach Europe. Human rights organizations have urged authorities to ensure that deportations comply with international refugee protections and that individuals seeking asylum have access to fair procedures.
Turkish officials say the country’s migration policies focus on combating illegal migration and smuggling networks while respecting international obligations and distinguishing between irregular migrants and those requiring protection.
