After Weeks of Border Fighting, Afghanistan, Pakistan Agree to De-escalate and Explore Comprehensive Solution

China announced that Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to avoid further escalation and to explore a comprehensive solution to their bilateral tensions, following weeks of deadly cross-border clashes that killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands.

The agreement came after seven days of talks held from April 1 to 7 in the Chinese city of Urumqi, as part of Beijing’s mediation efforts to reduce tensions and promote regional stability.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the three sides agreed to continue dialogue and work toward a broader framework addressing key issues in Afghanistan–Pakistan relations. She confirmed that both countries committed to refraining from actions that could escalate or complicate the situation.

Participants in the talks identified counterterrorism as the central issue affecting relations between the two countries, amid longstanding accusations by Pakistan that Afghanistan harbors militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)—claims Kabul denies.

The recent violence, which escalated earlier in 2026, included cross-border shelling and airstrikes, contributing to significant casualties and displacement along the frontier.

Despite the agreement, challenges remain, as both sides continue to differ over security concerns and responsibility for militant activity. However, the outcome of the China-hosted talks is seen as a tentative but important step toward easing tensions and rebuilding trust between the two neighbors.
