Shia Clerics Detained in Afghanistan Amid Dispute Over Eid al-Fitr Date
————————————–
Reports from Afghanistan indicate increasing pressure on Shia religious leaders in several regions, coinciding with a dispute between Shia scholars and the Taliban over the timing of Eid al-Fitr. The developments have raised concerns about restrictions on religious freedoms.
Differences in determining the date of Eid are common across Islamic schools of thought and have traditionally been accepted. However, according to Agence France-Presse, a number of Shia clerics in Herat province were detained after refusing to sign a pledge to align their Eid announcement with that of the Taliban authorities.
Separately, Euronews Persian reported that in provinces such as Balkh, pressure has been placed on prayer leaders to conduct Eid prayers in accordance with the Taliban’s declared date. Local sources said that in some areas, Eid prayers were enforced, with certain clerics compelled to comply under restrictive conditions, despite conflicts with their jurisprudential beliefs.
The developments come despite earlier understandings aimed at respecting religious differences. Analysts warn that continued pressure could deepen sectarian divisions and erode public trust in the country.
