EU Reaffirms Support for Women’s Healthcare in Afghanistan Amid Restrictions
………..
The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting healthcare access for women and girls in Afghanistan, Khaama Press reported. Announcing the initiative during the global 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence, the EU emphasized that access to medical care is a fundamental right and remains a priority despite ongoing restrictions and human rights concerns.
The EU highlighted that Afghan women continue to face significant barriers when seeking healthcare, with restrictions particularly affecting maternal and reproductive services. Its assistance includes programs to train women as healthcare professionals, enabling them to deliver services and reduce gender-based obstacles in medical settings.
Officials also stressed that addressing violence against women is essential for ensuring safe and reliable healthcare. Strengthening protections against gender-based violence is linked to more resilient public health systems and broader societal stability.
Since the political transition in Afghanistan in 2021, humanitarian groups have reported growing limitations on women’s access to medical care, education, and employment in the health sector. Many clinics have lost female staff, restricting healthcare availability, particularly in rural regions.
The EU stated it will continue collaborating with international partners and humanitarian organizations to maintain essential services. Observers caution, however, that sustainable progress depends on conditions allowing women to move freely, work safely in healthcare, and access care without fear or discrimination.
