Global Community Criticized for Failing to Address Human Rights Abuses in Afghanistan

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has issued a statement condemning the international community for its failure to establish a mechanism for accountability regarding human rights abuses in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021, Khaama Press reported.
According to the organization’s report, despite extensive documentation of abuses—including the ban on girls’ education, severe restrictions on women’s rights, and the suppression of dissent—no meaningful action has been taken. HRW has called on the UN Human Rights Council to create an independent international body to investigate these violations and urged the European Union to support this proposal in its upcoming annual resolution.
The report also warns that the lack of global action has emboldened the Taliban, leading to the enforcement of misogynistic and authoritarian policies. This situation, combined with the forced deportation of nearly 1.9 million Afghan migrants from Iran and Pakistan and a sharp decline in international aid, has exacerbated the country’s humanitarian crisis. HRW stressed that continued passivity from the global community risks legitimizing Taliban rule and its human rights violations.
