US Court Pauses Afghan Deportations as Amnesty Condemns Trump’s Move to End TPS
……………..
Amnesty International has denounced the Trump administration’s move to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghan nationals, warning that forcing them back to Afghanistan would breach international human rights standards. In a statement on X, Amnesty said Afghans under TPS in the US face the risk of detention and deportation, calling the move a betrayal of people who sought refuge.
The condemnation comes after a US federal appeals court temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s plan to end TPS for about 12,000 Afghans whose legal status expired this week. The nonprofit CASA filed a lawsuit to stop the termination of TPS for Afghans and Cameroonians. Although a lower court let the case proceed, it initially denied a stay on deportations. CASA then secured an emergency injunction from the appeals court, pausing removals while the case is reviewed.
Meanwhile, Refugee Advocacy Watch reported receiving distress messages from Afghan women stranded in Pakistan for over three years, many of whom are waiting on US P-1 and P-2 visas. The group urged the Trump administration to restart visa processing, warning that many Afghans, especially women and former US allies, face serious threats under Taliban rule.
