Children Form Half of Afghanistan’s Internally Displaced, Save the Children reports

A report by Save the Children reveals that over 38,000 people in Afghanistan were displaced by extreme weather in early 2024, with children making up half of this number, Amu TV reported yesterday.

Despite low carbon emissions, Afghanistan faces severe climate impacts such as droughts, floods, and storms, ranking as the sixth most vulnerable country to climate change.

The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by poverty, with a joint report from the UNDP and Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative indicating that 70% of Afghan children under 18 live in poverty, compared to 57.8% of adults. Alarmingly, children represent 58.9% of the nation’s poor population, underscoring the dire situation for the youth in Afghanistan amid ongoing environmental and humanitarian challenges.
