World Teacher’s Day Celebration Banned in Afghanistan Amidst Educator Marginalization

The Taliban authorities have banned the celebration of World Teacher’s Day, deeming it un-Islamic, further marginalizing educators in the country, Hasht-e-Subh Daily reported yesterday.

According to the article, over the past three years, many teachers have been dismissed due to ideological differences, replaced by clerics loyal to the ruling regime. Despite the ban, some educators have taken to social media to advocate for their rights and call for better educational conditions.

Teachers express that their essential roles in society have been overlooked, contributing to a decline in education quality. Economic challenges have escalated, particularly for female teachers whose salaries have been slashed. The United Nations has emphasized the importance of recognizing teachers’ contributions and including their perspectives in educational policies.

While some schools managed to hold low-key celebrations, the prevailing atmosphere remains tense, with fears of repercussions.
