Lack of Access to Information Hinders Afghan Journalists

Journalists in Afghanistan are facing significant challenges due to delayed access to information, which hampers their ability to report effectively, Khaama Press revealed in an article published today.

According to the source, the journalists are calling on the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture to ratify a law that would improve information access. While the ministry claims a draft law is prepared, it awaits approval from the Taliban leader.

Naeemul Haq Haqqani, head of the Government Media and Information Center, asserts that the Taliban has made strides in enhancing information availability. However, three years post-takeover, a formal law remains unapproved.

Compounding these issues is a worsening humanitarian crisis, worsened by restrictions on women’s employment, including female journalists. The ban limits economic opportunities for women and diminishes the diversity of perspectives in the media.
