UN raises concerns about increasing levels of malnutrition among women, children in Afghanistan
The World Food Programme in Afghanistan has highlighted a significant increase in malnutrition among women, with 1.2 million affected, Khaama Press reported yesterday.
The UN organization also warns of a rise in malnourished children, with a possibility of three million affected this year, the article added.
According to WFP, the reduction in foreign aid has led to more malnourished children seeking treatment, and the number of malnourished children being treated in specialized clinics has increased.
The organization expects nearly two million pregnant and lactating women to suffer from malnutrition, exceeding previous expectations.
Despite the challenges, the World Food Programme aims to assist around six million affected individuals suffering from malnutrition as they had their food aid reduced due to budget cuts.
The United Nations and other organizations have also highlighted the growing poverty and malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan, with over 23 million people in need of humanitarian assistance this year.
