British report: Saudi Arabia targeted the phones of UN experts to investigate war crimes in Yemen

A report by the British Middle East Eye newspaper revealed that Saudi Arabia had targeted the phones of United Nations experts tasked with investigating possible war crimes in Yemen, including the former Tunisian minister, and experts in Amnesty International, with spyware.
The report said that the targeting took place just weeks before Jendoubi and the Group of Eminent Experts, a panel mandated by the United Nations to investigate possible war crimes, issued a report on the actions of the Saudi-led coalition in the Yemen war.
It added, that the report concluded that many violations could lead to people being convicted of war crimes if they were referred to an independent and competent court. They also called on the international community to refrain from selling weapons to the various parties to the war.
The report indicated that Jendoubi’s phone included in a list of 50,000 phone numbers that appeared to be targets identified by NSO customers, to be spied on when using its Pegasus hacking program.
Jendoubi said that the Saudi hacking of his phone “represents the actions of a rogue state, and as international investigators, we are supposed to at least be protected, but I’m not at all surprised, I’ve been worried about this since 2019.”
The Group of Eminent Experts’ investigation into possible war crimes in Yemen was closed after an intense pressure campaign by Saudi Arabia last month after it used bribes and threats to force members of the United Nations Human Rights Council to vote against extending the investigation.
