Iraq’s police and security forces in southern parts of the country have prepared special plans to ensure security during the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage.

According to al-Hayat daily, a statement released by the Rafedein Operation Commander said there will be patrolling in all of the main and sideline roads and army drones will also be used to ensure security.

As well as police and army, Popular Mobilization Forces known as Hashd al-Shaabi will also contribute to the security measures.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.
