Map update: Syrian Army reopens Sukhnah-Deir Ezzor highway, seizes half of ISIS capital city
The Syrian Arab Army and allied paramilitaries – backed up by Russian airpower – have regained the strategic initiative in eastern Syria, fully reversing all ISIS gains made along the as-Sukhnah to Deir Ezzor highway since the end of September and pushing forth the front-line all the way to the gates of ISIS’ capital city.

Yesterday, the elite Tiger Forces of the Syrian Arab Army operating in southwestern Deir Ezzor Governorate battled their way into the heart of Al-Mayadeen city, ISIS’ de facto capital, taking control of about 50 percent of it.
Additional advances on Al-Mayadeen’s periphery has seen the Tiger Forces liberate the city airport and establish fire control over the main supply line used by ISIS to reinforce and resupply its presence in the city.
Furthermore, the Syrian Army counterattacked in far east Homs Governorate, driving ISIS forces south of as-Sukhnah and gaining full control over the Sukhnah to Deir Ezzor road. As a result, the road between as-Sukhnah to Deir Ezzor is officially opened again.
