The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) stated that the Bahraini authorities have arrested 42 citizens including 5 children within the first week of January, 2016. In its statement, BCHR added that 43% of these citizens were arrested when the security forces clamped down on a rally voicing solidarity with the prominent Saudi Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr who was executed by the Saudi regime on the onset of 2016. The center stressed that in the period between January 4 and 10, the authorities issued sentences amounting to a total of 30 and a half years against six citizens while sentencing three others to life imprisonment.
