French Muslim Councillor Defends Her Right to Wear Hijab and Participate in Political Life

A 23-year-old Muslim municipal councillor in the northern French city of Roubaix has defended her right to wear the Islamic headscarf while serving in public office, rejecting calls to ban conspicuous religious symbols in municipal council meetings.

Mah Kaba stressed that her Muslim identity does not conflict with her French citizenship or her responsibilities as an elected representative.

The controversy emerged during a municipal council session last October, when Céline Siah, an opposition representative from the far-right National Rally party, proposed prohibiting visible religious symbols within the council. In response, Kaba reaffirmed her commitment to wearing the hijab, declaring that she was proud of her religious identity and should not be expected to conceal it. She also emphasized that her election reflected her qualifications and ability to serve the community rather than her appearance.

Kaba argued that focusing political debates on Muslim women’s clothing diverts attention from more pressing municipal concerns, including public services and residents’ living conditions. She also criticized the discrimination experienced by Muslim women in France, maintaining that religious freedom and political participation should be protected under the principles of equality and equal opportunity.

Active in community initiatives in Roubaix since 2022, Kaba joined the municipal council in March 2026 and has participated in cultural and youth-related activities. She reaffirmed that her priority is serving the city’s residents without being forced to abandon her religious identity.
