In Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, Shia Muslims in the historic city of Derbent revived Ashura mourning ceremonies with gatherings in mosques and Hussainiyas, particularly at the city’s historic Juma Mosque. This year’s commemorations are also linked to International Hussain Day, scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026, with public programs aimed at introducing the message of Karbala to wider Western audiences. Activities include processions, blood donation campaigns, distribution of aid to the needy, and outreach through flowers, water bottles and English-language brochures.

In East Africa, Shia Muslims in Tanzania, especially the Khoja community with roots in India, are marking Muharram with mourning gatherings, sermons and community events. In Dar es Salaam, the central Shia mosque hosts “Hussein Day” programs attended by representatives from Sunni and other Muslim communities, while Zanzibar also witnesses large mourning ceremonies during the season.

In Madagascar, the Ahlulbayt Center in Mahajanga, affiliated with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi, may Allah prolong his life, is holding special programs during the first ten days of Muharram to promote the culture of Ashura and the teachings of the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them.
