UN Envoy Warns of Rising Islamophobia Worldwide, Calls for Education-Based Response

The United Nations special envoy on combating Islamophobia has warned of a growing rise in anti-Muslim sentiment in several parts of the world, urging coordinated international action to address the trend and promote coexistence.

Miguel Ángel Moratinos, who serves as the UN’s Special Envoy for Combating Islamophobia and High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, made the remarks ahead of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia observed annually on March 15.

In comments to UN media, Moratinos said the increase in anti-Muslim incidents, particularly in parts of Europe and other regions, is a concerning development that requires global vigilance. He also warned that some political movements are exploiting religion for political polarization, contributing to social divisions and fueling hate speech.

Moratinos was appointed to the position in May 2025 by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, as part of broader efforts to address religious discrimination.

The envoy stressed the need to build inclusive societies based on respect for the rights of all citizens regardless of their beliefs. He linked this objective to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Moratinos highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in spreading extremist rhetoric and discrimination against Muslims, noting that such content is sometimes justified under the banner of free expression.

He emphasized that education and awareness are key tools in countering Islamophobia, adding that many societies—especially in Western countries—still lack accurate knowledge about Islam and its culture.

The United Nations is currently preparing a comprehensive plan to combat Islamophobia, expected to be presented later this year, focusing on education, monitoring violations, legal measures, and strengthening law enforcement responses.
