Members of the Islamic Center in Tyler, Texas welcomed visitors from across the local community during the fifth annual “Open Mosque” event, aimed at introducing Islam and fostering dialogue with non-Muslims.
The event, held during the holy month of Ramadan, invited residents to learn about Islamic practices, listen to recitations from the Qur’an, and take part in discussions focused on ethical values and community engagement.
Kashif Alaauddin, a member of the Islamic center, said the initiative helps encourage dialogue and mutual understanding between Muslims and people of other backgrounds. Visitors from different communities attended the gathering, participated in activities, and shared a communal meal.
This year’s discussions focused on “Christ in Islam,” highlighting the status of Jesus Christ—known in Islam as Isa, son of Mary—in Islamic teachings and scripture.
Organizers encouraged attendees to ask questions throughout the evening and discuss common misconceptions about Islam often encountered online or on social media, emphasizing the importance of seeking information from reliable sources.
Saadia Malik, one of the organizers, urged visitors to engage directly with Muslims to better understand the religion, noting that information circulating on the internet may sometimes be inaccurate.
Meanwhile, Hisham Khalaf, the imam of the Islamic center, encouraged continued dialogue with the wider community, emphasizing that the mosque’s doors remain open to anyone interested in learning more about Islam.
