Catholic Scholar Describes Lady Fatima as Universal Model of Integrity
———————————-
A senior Catholic theologian and Islamic studies scholar has described Lady Fatima, the daughter of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family), as a universal model of integrity whose legacy transcends religious boundaries and speaks to the moral challenges of the modern world.
In an interview with the International Quran News Agency (IQNA), Christopher Clohessy, a South African Catholic priest and senior lecturer at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome, said Lady Fatima should be understood not only as a central figure in Islam but as an ethical example for all people.
Clohessy has spent years researching early Islamic history and is the author of Fatima, Daughter of Muhammad, an academic study based on early Arabic sources from both Sunni and Shia traditions. He said his interest in Lady Fatima emerged during his doctoral studies in Rome, after discovering a lack of rigorous academic work on her life despite her central role in Islamic tradition.
The scholar said Lady Fatima’s legacy is defined by her devotion to God, loyalty to her father, and principled stand for justice, even when she lacked broad public support. He emphasized that these qualities are human virtues rather than gendered ones, arguing that courage, integrity, and moral resolve apply to all people regardless of faith or background.
Clohessy also noted that approaching Islamic history as a non-Muslim allowed him to study sensitive and often sectarian issues—such as disputes surrounding leadership after the Prophet’s death—with greater balance and distance from polemical debates.
Reflecting on his research, Clohessy said his understanding of suffering, sanctity, and human resilience deepened through studying figures such as Lady Fatima and her daughter, Lady Zaynab. He added that their lives illustrate shared values found across religious traditions.
According to Clohessy, if Lady Fatima’s message were addressed to the world today, it would center on living with integrity, justice, and faithfulness—principles he described as universally relevant and urgently needed in modern societies.
