British Study: Muslim Abstinence from Alcohol Saves UK £1.6 Billion Annually

A new British study by the research firm Equity Center reveals that abstinence from alcohol by Muslim communities contributes an estimated £1.62 billion annually in savings for the United Kingdom. The findings come amid growing concerns over the social and economic burden of alcohol consumption.

According to the report, alcohol-related harms cost British society roughly £40 billion each year — including losses in productivity, significant health care expenses, traffic accidents, and incidents of domestic violence. In contrast, the report notes that about 90% of British Muslims — particularly among the younger generation — abstain from alcohol, helping ease pressure on public health systems and social services.

The widespread avoidance of alcohol reportedly supports better public health, reduces domestic violence, prevents family breakdowns, and lowers demand for addiction-related treatment services. The study also argues that promoting alcohol-free environments may foster healthier social interactions and build a culture grounded in awareness and discipline — drawing on faith-based and moral initiatives.

The report concludes with a call for the UK government to adopt policies aimed at decreasing alcohol consumption, such as clearer labelling, raising minimum unit prices, and backing community programs that highlight the risks of addiction and protect vulnerable families.
