Study Reveals High Levels of Islamophobia Among California Students
………..
A recent study highlights that Muslim students in California face disproportionately high rates of bullying and discrimination, raising concerns about their safety and well-being in schools.
According to research conducted by the California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Center for the Prevention of Hate and Bullying, 40% to 55% of Muslim students aged 11 to 18 report experiencing ongoing harassment related to their faith—double the national average.
The study also found that 67% of affected students did not report incidents to school staff due to fear or distrust, while 43% avoided attending school to escape bullying.
Experts warn that the issue reflects a broader school climate influenced by bias and Islamophobia, including in curricula, classroom practices, and ineffective reporting systems, resulting in emotional, academic, and social harm for students.
Advocates urge California schools to implement structural changes, including mandatory staff training, culturally sensitive educational materials, improved reporting mechanisms with accountability, and accessible support services for students to foster safer and more inclusive learning environments.
