The fourth annual American Muslim Deaf Expo is set to take place in Dallas, Texas, on August 30-31, bringing together hundreds of attendees to explore Islamic teachings through sign language. The event, organized by the Global Deaf Muslim Foundation (GDMF), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting deaf Muslims, aims to provide accessible resources and foster community connection.

This year’s expo will feature a diverse range of sign language-only sessions covering essential topics like faith, health, and employment. Attendees will have access to practical assistance, including resume-building workshops, alongside educational content designed to make religious knowledge more accessible.

Andalib Alyan, the executive director of GDMF, highlights the importance of bridging communication gaps, noting that the event will have interpreters and specialists on hand throughout. Alyan points out that many mosques lack sign language translation services, making it challenging for deaf Muslims to fully participate in religious activities.

The GDMF actively seeks interpreters to help integrate everyone into mosque life. The organization also focuses on teaching social and ethical behaviors to those who may not have received early guidance, promoting respect and community engagement. The expo also addresses broader wellness topics, with seminars on healthy eating, exercise, mental health, and family dynamics.

While GDMF hosts other events year-round, financial constraints pose a significant challenge for many individuals who wish to attend. Alyan encourages everyone to learn small gestures, such as “hello” in sign language, to build greater understanding and connection within the community.
