CAIR-CT Calls for Hate Crime Probe After Anti-Muslim Harassment in Stamford
——————————-
The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT) has urged local and federal law enforcement to launch a hate crime investigation into an incident of anti-Muslim harassment outside the Islamic Cultural Center of New York (ICCNY) mosque.
According to a press release from CAIR-CT, on the evening of August 9, a man in a white car shouted Islamophobic insults at families with children as they were leaving the mosque. The man reportedly told the families to leave using derogatory words and questioned why they were in a “Christian country” when there are “Fifty-six Muslim countries.”
CAIR-CT Chairman Farhan Memon stated that the verbal assault was a “deliberate and targeted” act intended to intimidate Muslim families. In addition to calling for a hate crime investigation, CAIR-CT has asked for increased police patrols around local mosques to ensure the safety of the community. The incident occurs amidst a period of heightened Islamophobia, as documented in CAIR’s 2025 Civil Rights Report, “Unconstitutional Crackdowns.”
