Deaf and Mute Community in Najaf Serves Arbaeen Mourners Through Sign Language

Members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in Najaf al-Ashraf are taking part in the service of Imam Hussein’s mourning rituals through a dedicated volunteer procession, demonstrating their commitment to the values of the Hussaini tradition through sign language and community support.

The procession, located at the beginning of Zain al-Abideen Street leading toward the shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), provides various services to mourners and visitors participating in the Ashura season. More than 200 members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community are involved in the initiative, offering assistance to visitors as part of their voluntary service.

Beyond its service activities, the procession also holds daily mourning gatherings that recount the events of the Battle of Karbala and highlight the life and teachings of Imam Hussein and his family (peace be upon them). The lectures and religious programs are translated into sign language, allowing deaf participants to engage with the spiritual and educational messages of the gatherings.

The initiative reflects the broad participation of different segments of society in preserving and commemorating Hussaini rituals.
