Iraq’s Ministry of Communications has announced the launch of free internet service at holy shrines and religious sites starting next week, coinciding with Eid al-Ghadir.
Communications Minister Mustafa Sanad said the service will begin on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah, with technical and logistical preparations coordinated through the General Company for Communications and Informatics and contracted internet providers.
The ministry said the plan will provide free internet every Thursday and Friday throughout the year around major religious sites, including the holy shrines in Najaf, Karbala, Kadhimiya, and Samarra.
Free internet will also be activated during major religious occasions, including the Prophet’s birthday, Eid al-Ghadir, the Shaabaniyah pilgrimage, the birth and martyrdom anniversaries of the Imams, peace be upon them, and the months of Muharram and Safar.
The ministry also announced a wider plan for Ashura and Arbaeen in 2026, including free internet in Bayn al-Haramayn, surrounding areas, border crossings, and main routes used by pilgrims.
Officials said the initiative aims to support visitors, improve communication services, and contribute to the success of Iraq’s major religious pilgrimage seasons.
