The General Secretariat of the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine has announced the start of construction on a new minaret standing 80 meters tall, as part of the ongoing expansion of the shrine’s sacred courtyard in Karbala.

According to officials from the shrine’s Expansion Projects Department, the minaret is being built along the perimeter wall of the expanded courtyard and is designed to serve as a prominent architectural landmark for pilgrims visiting the holy site. The project forms part of a broader development plan aimed at accommodating the steadily growing number of visitors, particularly during major religious occasions.

The officials said the minaret will be constructed in accordance with traditional Islamic architectural principles and in visual harmony with the existing structures of the shrine. Its design is intended not only to enhance the spiritual and aesthetic character of the complex, but also to support better organization of pilgrim movement within the expanded area.

The report, carried by Shia news outlets citing shrine authorities, noted that the expansion project seeks to increase the shrine’s capacity, improve infrastructure, and facilitate safer and smoother access for millions of pilgrims who travel to Karbala annually to visit the shrine of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).
