Millions March Toward Holy Karbala to Mark Arbaeen Pilgrimage
……………….
Millions of pilgrims from across Iraq and around the world continue their journey on foot toward the holy city of Karbala to commemorate Arbaeen, the religious observance that marks 40 days since the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his pure family).
The pilgrimage, which peaks on the 20th of Safar in the Islamic calendar, is one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. Pilgrims have been streaming from various Iraqi provinces, including the south, center, and north, as well as from international points of entry such as the border crossings in Basra, Wasit, and Muthanna. The roads leading to Karbala are witnessing an extraordinary influx of people moving in an atmosphere charged with faith and devotion.
To support the massive crowds, thousands of volunteers, service organizations, and government agencies have mobilized along the pilgrimage routes. Husseini processions, or mawakib, are providing essential services—such as food, water, medical aid, and temporary shelter—to the travelers. Security forces and health workers are also on high alert to ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants throughout the event.
Preliminary estimates suggest that this year’s Arbaeen pilgrimage could draw more than 25 million people, surpassing previous records. The growing turnout reflects the increasing global significance of Arbaeen, not only as a religious ritual but also as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and solidarity in the face of oppression.
Beyond its spiritual and historical roots, the pilgrimage carries a broader humanitarian message—one that transcends national, ethnic, and sectarian boundaries. For many, the walk to Karbala is an expression of moral commitment and a call for justice, inspired by the enduring legacy of Imam Hussein.
