Due to growing number of visitors, giant sewage treatment plant being constructed in Holy Karbala

The Sewage Directorate in Holy Karbala is implementing one of the most important projects in the Middle East which is a giant sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 400,000 cubic meters per hour in Karbala, Iraq.

This major project is being implemented to serve the millions of people who visit the city during the annual pilgrimages, as well as the population growth in the province in recent years.

Eng. Jalil Ibrahim Al-Sabbagh, assistant director of Sewage Directorate of Holy Karbala, said in a press interview that “the plant is being built in the Hor Mansour region and is expected to be completed in 2024,” adding that “it will have a capacity of 16,000 cubic meters per hour, which is enough to treat all the sewage that is transported from the city of Karbala.”

According to experts, the project is also expected to serve many neighborhoods of Holy Karbala, including Al-Mamalaji and Al-Muallimin neighborhoods; as they are located in the lowest point of the city and are prone to flooding.
