October 2nd marks International Day of Non-Violence

On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared October 2 — the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of India’s independence movement — as the International Day of Non-Violence. The UN resolution is intended to promote the culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence.

The UN General Assembly invited the governments and institutions covered by this entity, regional organizations and non-governmental organizations, as well as individuals to celebrate the second day of October as the International Day of Non-violence in order to promote the culture of non-violence through education and raising public awareness.

As a political and spiritual leader, Mahatma Gandhi led the Indian nation on its path to freedom from the colonial rule of the British Empire.

Throughout his life, he rejected the use of any kind of terror and violence to achieve his goals.

Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence has influenced many non-violent resistance movements around the world to this day.

The Center for Deradicalization & Extremism Prevention (Freemuslim Association), which is affiliated to Ayatollah Shirazi World Foundation, is an entity that was formed in line with the same goal and runs significant relevant activities throughout the year.

So, on October 2, along with other organizations active in the field, Freemuslim Association makes special efforts to promote the culture of non-violence based on the teachings of Islam and Ahlul-Bayt (peace be upon them).
